I often wonder what events in my life shaped me into who I am today. Kind of along the lines of the movie “It’s a wonderful life.” (If you haven’t seen that movie, watch it!)
I found some birth pictures from when my little brothers was born that I took when I was about seven and nine years old. I remember being so excited about the whole process I used a whole roll of film when one of my brothers was crowning because I didn’t want to miss anything!
Photographing my brother’s births was one of the keys to leading me to where I am today. Another influence was my mom being a midwife. My little brothers were just babies when my mom worked as a midwife and they were still nursing so I would go to births with my mom. I would watch my brothers while my mom attended the birth. These are faint memories but I remember feeling special that I could be part of such an amazing event in someones life! The midwifes would be busy going in and out and I could hear the mom in labour. I loved being in that atmosphere!
The last piece that drew me to birth photography is, while I was attending photography school I did an assignment about the Birth Centre in Calgary. I thought about how neat it would be to photograph a birth. My sister was pregnant at the time and let me photograph hers. I was in awe at how beautifully strong my sister was and I knew I needed to photograph more births.
These few events are what have taken me to this point in my life. I love birth photography so much!
